Sun Hats

Sun hats provide head and face coverage for walking, hiking, camping, travel, gardening and other outdoor activities in bright or warm conditions. Unlike standard caps, many designs use a wider brim to provide additional shade around the face, with some styles also extending coverage towards the ears and neck.

Browse sun hats in different brim sizes, materials and fits, and compare ventilation, adjustability, packability and coverage. Consider how long you expect to spend outdoors and whether you need a lightweight hat for active use, a wider brim for greater shade or a design that packs easily for travel.

Choosing the Right Amount of Coverage

Sun hats vary considerably in shape and brim size. A wider brim can provide more shade around the face and neck, while a smaller brim may feel less intrusive during energetic activities or in breezy conditions. Some designs also include additional neck coverage for prolonged periods outdoors.

Consider where the hat will be used as well as its appearance. Open, exposed environments may make secure fit and broader coverage more important than they would be for occasional everyday wear.

Fit, Ventilation and Warm-Weather Comfort

A comfortable sun hat should stay securely in place without feeling excessively tight. Adjustable sizing, chin cords or internal bands may help with fit where included, particularly when walking in windy or exposed areas.

Ventilation can become important in hot conditions. Lightweight fabrics, mesh panels or ventilation openings may improve airflow, while heavier materials can feel warmer during strenuous activity. Check the individual construction when choosing for long periods in the sun.

Packability and Sun Protection

If the hat will regularly be carried in a backpack, suitcase or day bag, consider whether the brim can be folded or packed without losing its intended shape. Lightweight packable designs can be convenient for travel, although more structured hats may provide a firmer brim.

Coverage alone does not establish a specific level of ultraviolet protection. Where a manufacturer states a tested sun-protection rating or other relevant specification, check the individual product information before choosing. Compare coverage, comfort, fit and packability to find a sun hat suited to your usual outdoor activities.
